Translation projects and terminology management in Across

Efficient handling of your projects by our Across specialists

The technologies we use include the Across Language Server and Across Clients (Across Translator Edition).

D.O.G. GmbH is a certified Across partner and has been using Across since 2006. Over the years, we have built up a large base of qualified technical translators from various fields and subject areas who know how to work with Across.

What is Across?

Across belongs to the family of translation memory technologies or CAT tools. It shares with other applications the basic principle of translation memories : Across stores each translation as a sentence pair (source and translation) in a database. Besides perfect matches between a stored sentence and a sentence in a document, there are also fuzzy matches when new sentences differ from stored sentences by a few words. For this purpose, Across uses various match categories. Such categories can be found in all translation memory systems available on the market under different names.

Central control

Across is something more than a pure translation program. It contains many functions for the management of translations. One of the main arguments for using Across is the integration and automation of the entire translation process, from placing the order to delivering the translations and updating the translation memories in different languages. Therefore, Across is designed as a closed system that seamlessly passes work packages to the connected “contributors” in the process in a controlled manner. It is closed, meaning that it deliberately prevents unauthorized external access to and manipulation of data. This is the case, for example, when segments are translated or modified in another system. The downloading of files or the use of machine translation can also be prevented via the configuration of the Across Server.

All functions that simplify the editing of projects are integrated in a single interface. The manual effort for analyzing files, splitting projects into packages for different work steps and languages, updating translation memories, and entering data for service billing are all located in one central place, the Across Language Server.

System architecture and process

The architecture of the system is based on a closed web server. We connect our own D.O.G. Across Server (the so-called Trusted Server) to our customer’s Across Server (the so-called Master Server) and receive complete projects, which we then pass on to the individual Across translators (our clients). This exchange of the project and the project core data between us and our clients takes place via CrossGrid.

Our translation process with Across

After we have received an order from the customer via the Across server, the project is created in the D.O.G. Across server. The D.O.G. project manager distributes the individual work packages to be translated together with the respective analyses to the regular translators for the individual languages.

The translators perform the translation locally and then upload it to the D.O.G. Across server on the agreed date. The D.O.G. project manager has an overview of the project status at all times, which is a great advantage for projects with several packages in different languages.

Quality assurance of Across projects

When the translation is finished, we perform a quality check in accordance with the DIN EN 17100 standard. For this purpose, our reviewers use the quality assurance function of Across and the integrated terminology database CrossTerm.

For certain projects, we also have the option of going beyond the classic quality assurance function of Across and using the extended functions of our own quality assurance software ErrorSpy. For this purpose, we use a special Across add-on that enables us to import the translation content into ErrorSpy.

Terminology at Across

Across stores the terminology in the terminology database CrossTerm. Of course, we use this terminology in Across projects and maintain new terms directly in CrossTerm. For customers who have stored their terminology centrally in our terminology management system LookUp, we ensure data exchange between CrossTerm and LookUp via an adapted TBX format. In this way, data can be exchanged quickly and without loss between the two systems.

Delivery of the translation
Finally, the project is delivered and invoiced.

FAQs
How to proofread in Across?

There are different views in the translation editor of Across. For the revision, you select the correction mode. Depending on which editing step you are in, the segments are assigned a corresponding status, e.g. “translated”, “proofread” or “corrected”, ….. When configuring the system, one can specify what should be checked and which checks are mandatory checks. Typical checks are the terminology check, the spelling check, the number and date check

What is the Edit Distance Report of Across?

This is a report that indicates sentence by sentence how much a translation has been corrected. The report displays the original translation and the corrected translation side by side, highlighting the changes. Another column shows the percentage change. This is useful, for example, when post-editing machine translations.

What match categories are available at Across?

The match categories are important for the analysis and indicate where a translation comes from and how exactly a source sentence matches a sentence in the translation memory. Across works with similar categories as other CAT tools: context matches, 100% matches, fuzzy matches. In addition, there is the 100% match (MT) category, i.e. matches from MT systems are displayed separately. Context matches include a match of the context in addition to the 100% match with a segment from the database.

Resources and training

The Across translators of D.O.G. GmbH have the required linguistic and professional qualifications as specified in the DIN EN 17100 standard. The fact that we adhere to these specifications is verified through repeated audits. In addition, these translators are specialized in working with Across, are familiar with the specific Across processes, and know the functions of the ATE (Across Translator Edition). D.O.G. employees regularly attend training courses on Across technologies so that we can use new functions. For example, we can use the new Across expert functions such as the connection of machine translation systems to Across.
